Melanie Franklin, dressed in her plum-colored track suit, sat in front of her desktop computer at the brown granite-topped built-in desk in the kitchen after supper, the dishwasher whooshing behind her, studying the family stock account, trying to figure out what was going on with the Leapfrog Technologies stock. It was like trying to read a serious science textbook when she hadn’t read a science textbook in a long, long time. She was trying to remember what the technical language meant while stringing together what the sentences meant. Finally, she reached up into the cookbook shelf, got a note pad, and started writing out the meanings of the technical terms so that she could refer to the meanings when she got confused. Kat, dressed in her gold and blue dance team cover-ups, came up behind her. “Hey, Mom.”

She turned. “Hi, honey.”

“What you doing?”

“Trying to figure out this stock account.”

“Where’s Dad?”

“Up in his office.”

Kat looked over her mother’s shoulder. “That number’s been going down all day.” She pointed at the Leapfrog Technologies screen. “You should talk to Dad.” She kissed her mom on the cheek. “I’ve got practice. I won’t be too late.”

“Thanks, honey. Drive safely.”

Melanie studied the screen. Kat was right. The Leapfrog Technologies stock had lost a little value, but the number of shares was also down. She got out her cell phone and called Ronnie upstairs. “Hey, honey, have you got a minute.”

“Sure. I need a break from this program anyway.”

“What’s up with the stock account? It looks like we’ve been losing Leapfrog shares.”

“The stock lost a little value today, so I’m guessing a preset program sold some shares to take the losses. The money will be automatically reinvested. It’s a tax thing. And we’re still trying to get some car money. Want me to come down and look?”

“No, don’t bother. I was just curious.”

“Okay, anything else?”

“No. Hope you don’t have to work too late.”

“Fallout from the fire. A couple of days should set things right.”

Melanie ended the call and set her phone next to her mouse. So now she had to write down what the shares were worth and multiply that by the number sold and then see if that amount resurfaced in cash or new shares of something else, either in the stock account or mutual fund account. Even then she wouldn’t have the exact amount unless she tracked the change in price all day against the numbers sold. Her head started pounding at a spot behind her left eye. She put her hand over the eye. God, this was so hard. She just couldn’t make her brain work anymore. She logged out of the account. She’d finish this in the morning when she was fresh. Right now she needed to take some ibuprofen and get ready for bed.
